Holly Hungett | Artist Statement
“I am primarily a plein air painter. I love being outside in all conditions, feeling the air, wind, smells, and sounds. I feel fortunate to live in this mild climate and paint outside regularly with friends. When searching for a scene to paint I look for what moves me, what has an emotional impact on me. Often something in the scene grabs my attention and reminds me to be still and present with the earth, my body, and breath. When that happens, I feel like I am in a heightened state of awareness or FLOW. Those times don’t happen each time I go out, but when they do occur they are magical, and healing. I hope some of that feeling of ‘stopping, breathing, and being still’ will be transmitted through my paintings.
If I am working at my home studio, I most often paint from my sketches made on location rather than photos. My drawings retain an emotional connection to the place and the day more than photos can reveal. Often the forms and colors are painted from memories of walking and being present in nature. Whatever I am painting, my interest lies in abstraction, simplification, and discovering the essential elements of the scene.
I have lived in Santa Barbara and Goleta with my husband since 1986. Previously, I lived in Northern California and Maine. While growing up my father’s work took us to Australia, South America, and New Zealand. Much of where I grew up was rural, that personal history affects my interests and artistic expression, and love for being in nature. I have practiced yoga, movement, and healing bodywork for over 25 years. This also has influenced my artwork and my sensitivities.”
