Celebrating the holiday season, the Wildling Museum hosted its 8th Annual Holiday Boutique on Sunday, December 2, 2018. Admission was free from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm, with a special members-only preview at 12 pm. Local artists and craftspeople were featured. Carolers added to the festive atmosphere, along with free cider and cookies and a photo opportunity with the Wildling holiday décor.

This show features work from the Abstract Art Collective (AAC), a Santa Barbara community-based group of artists. Abstract art challenges the artist and audience to mine the depths of emotion and intellect—to journey far from real-world imagery and into the imagination. In this exhibit, you will see the artists’ response to various aspects of nature experiences—responses they’ve chosen to share.

Students learned how to formulate their very own fragrance with botanical essences gathered from around the world.

Susan Rowland’s talk used depth psychology and alchemy to show what modern western life has forgotten, ignored or repressed, that the imagination is the most important natural resource, one that connects us to non-human nature as an essential part of our being.

Several other rim finishes such as jute, grapevine and other natural materials were shared with the students. Class was suitable for any level of experience with techniques and/or materials. Students were furnished with an approximate 6 - 7 inch diameter gourd.

Inspired by nature, these artists use diverse materials and methods to create environments that engage the imagination. The viewer was invited to look into the details of their artwork and explore the unique weaving of image, texture, and pattern that resembles nature and yet is unlike anything in the natural world.
